Recently, the topic of Meng Wanzhou’s release and safe return has not only been on the hot search of major domestic social media platforms, but also become the focus of foreign media attention.
The US Department of justice recently signed an agreement with Meng Wanzhou to postpone prosecution, and the US withdrew its extradition application to Canada. Meng Wanzhou left Canada without pleading guilty or paying a fine and returned to China on the evening of 25 Beijing time. Because Meng Wanzhou returned home, the Biden government has been fiercely criticized by some hardliners in China. On the 27th U.S. local time, White House press secretary pusaki was asked by reporters whether the Meng Wanzhou case and the two Canadian cases were “prisoner exchange” and whether the White House participated in coordination. Pusaki said “there is no connection”. She said that this is an “independent legal decision” of the U.S. Department of justice and “our China policy has not changed”.
According to Reuters, on September 27 local time, a reporter directly asked “whether the White House participated in the negotiation of the ‘Exchange’ between China and Canada last Friday”.
White House press secretary pusaki first replied, “we will not talk about this in such terms. We call it the action of the Department of justice, which is an independent department. This is a law enforcement issue, specifically involving the released Huawei personnel. Therefore, this is a legal issue.”
Pusaki said it was “good news” for Kang Mingkai to return to Canada and “we don’t hide our promotion of this matter”. However, she stressed that there was “no connection” between this and the latest progress of Meng Wanzhou case, “I think it is very important to point out and be very clear about this”, and once again claimed that the U.S. Department of justice is “independent” and can make “independent law enforcement decisions”.
Pusaki added that “our China policy has not changed. We do not seek conflict. It is a competitive relationship.”
On the one hand, pusaki declared that he would cooperate with his allies to make China “take responsibility” for the unreasonable charges listed by the US government; While stressing that “we will continue to engage with China, maintain open communication channels, manage competition responsibly, and discuss potential areas of common interest”.
At the regular press conference of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 27th, foreign media reporters compared the Meng Wanzhou case with the two Canadian cases and said that “some outsiders believe that the time point at which the two Canadians were released proves that China is implementing ‘hostage diplomacy and coercion diplomacy’.” in response, Hua Chunying responded that the nature of the Meng Wanzhou incident is completely different from that of the Kang Mingkai and Michael cases. Meng Wanzhou incident is a political persecution against Chinese citizens. The purpose is to suppress China’s high-tech enterprises. Meng Wanzhou has returned to the motherland safely a few days ago. Kang Mingkai and Michael were suspected of crimes endangering China’s national security. They applied for bail pending trial on the grounds of physical illness. After confirmation by relevant departments and diagnosis by professional medical institutions, and guaranteed by the Canadian ambassador to China, the relevant Chinese courts approved bail pending trial according to law, which shall be implemented by China’s national security organs.
