Ministry of Foreign Affairs: as a province of China, Taiwan is not eligible to join the United Nations

This (12th) afternoon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a regular press conference. A reporter asked: Recently, individual political figures in Taiwan have repeatedly complained that foreign media deliberately distorted UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, claiming that “this resolution did not determine Taiwan’s representation, and even Taiwan was not mentioned in it”. What is China’s comment on this?
In this regard, foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that the remarks of individual political figures in Taiwan are unreasonable. China has repeatedly expressed its position on the Taiwan related issues of the United Nations General Assembly. I would like to emphasize the following points.
First, there is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. The government of the people’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the whole of China. This is a basic fact recognized by the international community. Our position of adhering to one China will not change. Our attitude against “two Chinas” and “one China, one Taiwan” and “Taiwan independence” cannot be challenged. Our determination to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity is unwavering.
Second, the United Nations is an intergovernmental international organization composed of sovereign states. General Assembly Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, has completely resolved the issue of China’s representation in the United Nations politically, legally and procedurally. All specialized agencies of the United Nations system and the United Nations Secretariat should abide by the one China principle and General Assembly Resolution 2758 in any affairs involving Taiwan. As a province of China, Taiwan is not eligible to join the United Nations at all. Practice over the years has fully shown that the United Nations and the general membership recognize that there is only one China in the world, that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and fully respect China’s exercise of sovereignty over Taiwan.
Third, General Assembly Resolution 2758 embodies internationally recognized legal facts, which are written in black and white. The Taiwan authorities and anyone can not wantonly deny or distort. No form of “Taiwan independence” can succeed. Taiwan’s individual people’s international speculation on this issue is a flagrant challenge and serious provocation to the one China principle, a flagrant violation of General Assembly Resolution 2758, and a typical “Taiwan independence” speech, which we firmly oppose. This statement is also destined to have no market in the international community. We fully believe that the Chinese government and people’s just cause of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, opposing secession and realizing national reunification will continue to be understood and supported by the United Nations and the majority of Member States.
